About Us

The Misericordia Community Hospital provides a full range of acute care services to diverse and growing communities, from west Edmonton to northern Alberta. Health care services follow deep-rooted traditions of healing the body, enriching the mind and nurturing the soul.

Some of the ways we’re making a difference are that we:

  • currently perform the second-highest number of surgeries in the Edmonton zone;
  • are recognized as a centre of excellence for breast cancer surgery and reconstruction;
  • have created a new model of care for hysteroscopy, which makes gynecological surgeries more accessible and frees up other operating rooms for major surgeries;
  • have achieved a Baby-Friendly designation, which is a worldwide strategy to enhance infant feeding developed by the World Health Organization;
  • have a top Orthopedic program that provides a range of services to treat trauma, high-intensity elective and urgent orthopedic cases (approx. 750 total hip and knee replacements each year);
  • are home to the Institute for Reconstructive Sciences in Medicine (iRSM), an internationally recognized clinical and research institute focused on medical reconstructive sciences;
  • have the only publicly funded Hyperbaric Oxygen Unit (HBO) in the province that provides care for people across Western Canada;
  • are the only facility in Alberta to offer sedated MRI exams for adult outpatients whose medical needs make it difficult or impossible for them to be still during an MRI; and
  • will be opening a brand new, 5,000 m2 emergency department in 2023.

Caring for our community’s families

The Misericordia is a Baby-Friendly designated hospital that provides families only semi-private and private rooms for labour and delivery and postpartum care, and we arrange anesthesia for those who request it. We integrate family and medical professionals when caring for our smallest patients: Baby Pause is a communication tool that integrates patient/family assessments as part of care, and our recently renovated NICU has FiCARE, another model of family integration for new babies.
